DAY 2 – SIGIRIYA/DAMBULLA
The first stop of our journey will be the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya. Dubbed by some as the “eighth wonder of the world”, Sigiriya is an architectural and artistic marvel, with enough amazing photo opportunities to drive any photographer wild. The fortress was built in 471 AD by king Kassapa, who after killing his father for the throne built an impregnable palace fortress for his protection.
Sigiriya still has modern architects baffled today as to how certain things such as the water supply to the pond right at the top were achieved. Sigiriya is also known for its well preserved frescoes of the Sigiriya maidens, believed to be images of the king’s wives. Although the fortress was built in 471 AD, there is evidence to prove that the rock was inhabited long before this and was used as a monastery in far more ancient times. The climb to the top is fairly challenging but your effort will be rewarded by some spectacular views and some amazing photo opportunities in terms of landscapes and ancient culture.
DAY 3 – KANDY
Kandy has a lot to offer for photographers. The ancient city of Kandy is the picturesque cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Tucked away in the hill country, the city of Kandy offers you a unique flavour of Sri Lankas rich history and culture. Experience the colours, sounds and tastes of this magnificent city and the legendary hospitality of its people. Apart from this, touring here in Kandy will give you easy access to some of the most amazing photo opportunities, such as Greeny Sri Lankan hills and tea estates. Kandy is a town that holds many amazing attractions. The temple of the sacred tooth relic is one of kandy’s biggest Highlights and this beautiful temple attracts thousands of visitors every day, foreign and local to take in its amazing architecture and art as well as to take part in the daily thewawa ceremony. In addition to all of this, there are many other ancient temples to explore in Kandy, plus many more amazing locations that you can visit.
DAY 4 – NUWARAELIYA
After your time in Kandy is done, we will head to the spectacularly scenic town of Nuwaraeliya, located in the central highlands of the island and will be a sure treat for those who enjoy landscape photography. The town is fondly known as ‘little England’ due to the chilly weather and the colonial architecture that is prominent in the town.
Nuwaraeliya is known for its spectacular views and is also a home of the renowned Sri Lankan high grown tea. You can visit a tea plantation and learn about and shoot the whole process of tea production and maybe even try it yourself. The magnificent views that adorns this mountain town will leave you breathless. Take a walk through the beautiful green plantations of world renowned Ceylon Tea and witness first hand how this legendary tea is created.
DAY 5 – YALA
Wildlife photography lovers will love this place. The Yala National Park is the most famous wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka and this vast reserve is home to a multitude of fascinating wildlife as well as plant life. Now you might see why Sri Lanka has ranked as no1 destination to be traveled in recent years. Such a small island has too many things to offer and too many clicks to take. Deer, peacocks, wild boar, bears and herds of wild elephants are just some of the creatures that live here.
Yala is also known as one of the best places to spot the ever illusive Sri Lankan leopard and is also home to an amazing array of endemic birds. Explore this amazing realm in a jeep safari escorted by experienced and knowledgeable guides and trackers and see for yourself the amazing creatures that inhabit it.
DAY 6 – GALLE
Galle, as it is seen today, is inextricably linked to the great maritime powers of the 16th and 17th Centuries: This is a great place for photography as it still carries the ancient look and feel.
Galle also offers beautiful beaches around the south south-west cost in Sri Lanka. Being largely well preserved, Galle Fort provides a fascinating insight into colonial life. The original Dutch buildings inside the fort were designed to be as insulated as possible from the sun, with multilayered tiles roofs and thick masonry walls.
DAY 7 – COLOMBO
After packing up your things and getting ready for departure, you can spend your final hours on the paradise isle to go on one last shopping round in Colombo before you head out to catch your flight home.
The buzzing and Vibrant City of Colombo is Sri Lankas commercial capital that plays host to a mixture of a modern metropolis with echoes and remnants of a colonial era. Visit the commercial area of Fort, so named because of its use by the Portuguese and Dutch as a fort, which you can see through the architecture of many old buildings. Explore the street markets of Pettah that brings together the diverse colours and flavors of a multi ethnic and multi cultural society. You could also visit the Colombo National Museum for a glimpse of Sri Lankas Rich culture and history.
